School Age Sunday School
Cribbery
Being so young, love is the primary teaching lesson. We are blessed again with a teacher who knows the importance of loving Jesus Christ.
Toddlers & 2s
A fun and loving class for 2-3 year olds. The class focuses on one central point. This point is built upon by short stories, artwork, and songs.
Pre-School
Through class projects, these little ones begin to understand the true meaning of the traditional Bible stories.
Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grade
Our class of Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students study God through Bible lessons, activities, songs, prayer, and role-playing. They learn how the Bible can be useful in their lives. Students learn to find Bible verses by Book, Chapter and Verse and they are given their own NIV Bibles as they are promoted to the 3rd & 4th grade class.
3rd & 4th Grade
Our 3rd and 4th graders learn about the Bible and how it applies to any situation that we may encounter in our lives. They learn that the Bible is as relevant today as it was at the time that it was written. They also learn to use a concordance so that they can locate verses by topic (they are given their own concordance as they are promoted to our 5th & 6th grade class). We encourage our 3rd & 4th grade students to begin to use their God given gifts in missions and ministries. They are encouraged to acolyte (help bring the light of Christ into the sanctuary as services begin) and to join our children's choir.
5th & 6th Grade
Our 5th & 6th grade class offers a transition from our children's classes to our youth classes with a focus on relating the Bible to everyday life situations. The class focuses, primarily, on the Old Testament because it provides the foundations for all the Christ did for us. The students read from the Bible and continue to learn to use their concordance. They are encouraged to learn the books of the Bible in order. The class also helps the students to learn to pray, as individuals and as a group. Join us during Lent as we review the gospels!
Junior High
The Youth are studying Biblical truths and how they relate to our times, within the structure of our schools, church, community, and families.
Senior High
Youth Grades 9 through 12. We follow "Bible Lessons for Youth". Through discussion, sharing and praying, we find God's plan for our life.
Adult Sunday School
First UMC offers a variety of adult Sunday School classes. For a sample of current offerings, see below.
Young Adults
The newest addition to our Sunday School offerings, this class is geared to students that are single and in the 18-24 age range.
Path Finders
The Path Finders (formerly known as the Young Followers class) is a Sunday school class for young singles and couples ages 18 and older. The core of our class currently consists of young adults in their thirties. We enjoy Bible-based studies and discussion with a focus on understanding God's Word as it applies to our contemporary times. We also enjoy Christian fellowship through group outings, retreats, and community service projects. Some of our group's mission projects include Angel Tree Prison Ministries and Christmas food basket collections, Earth Day community trash pick-up, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, local nursing home visits for worship service through music, and others. Whether you are new to the area, visiting, or looking for a diverse group of young Christian adults to connect with, we welcome you to come visit and explore God's Word with us.
Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club is a Sunday school class for adults of all ages.
The class focuses on Bible study using appropriate material (A Life
Guide Bible Study or Life Application Bible Studies) to guide its
members. In recent years, the class has studied books from both the
Old and New testaments including: Genesis, Exodus, Mathew, Acts,
Timothy I & II, and Titus.
We've just completed a series on women in the Old Testament and are
now studying Isaiah. We occasionally take
time out for various specialized studies, such as Purpose Driven Life
and Belief Matters. Class members may volunteer to lead the always
engaging discussions. Each class session starts with a short prayer
time.
The members also support each other through fellowship and
charitable causes. We participate in the Angel Tree program and
other church wide outreach ministries. Whether you have are new to
Bible study or have a wealth of knowledge there is always something to
learn. Visitors are always welcome and if you didn't bring your Bible, come anyway. We will be glad to share.
Christian Fellowship
This class welcomes adults, of all ages, who are striving to mature
in their Christian faith. We choose studies that are Bible-based,
often using series written by nationally recognized Christian leaders,
with material that is relevant to our everyday living. Through our
studies, we strive to strengthen our discipleship by examining our life
situations and experiences in the context of God's Word.
Each week our class is led by one of our several volunteer
facilitators. The style of the lessons is interactive, with
discussions and sometimes sharing of personal events and experiences.
Each person participates to the extent that they wish.
Our class supports many of the church activities, including the
annual bazaar, the Angel Tree program, Winterhaven homeless shelters,
and the summer mission project teams, among others.
We invite you to come and join us for a few weeks to see if this is a
good fit for you to grow in your Christian understanding and action.
Koinonia (Fellowship)
An adult class for ages 18 and up. Each Sunday we study God's Word through Bible reading and lively discussion. The focus of this class is to understand how to apply what is written in Scripture to each of our lives.
Keystone
This fellowship, first called the Excelsior Young Adult class, is the longest running class and the cornerstone of the Sunday School. The class studies the Bible using the Adult Bible Studies curriculum from Cokesbury. Discussions involve our belief in our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the faith of our church body.
