Elizabeth House and FISH of Laurel
Elizabeth House is a non-profit volunteer organization that exists to help our needy neighbors in the greater Laurel area. Incorporated since 1976 under the name FISH of Laurel, Inc., it operates entirely from private donations of money, food, and volunteer services. Many people in the Laurel area have joined to assist those in need. Elizabeth House works routinely with businesses, churches, synagogues, other community services organizations, and a large number of volunteers-all of whom share concern for the disadvantaged in the greater Laurel area. All donations are tax deductible, and all policies, programs, and activities conform to federal and state laws on race, color, religion, national origin, age and sex.
Elizabeth House is a Laurel based organization run by volunteers, located at 308 Gorman Avenue in Laurel (301 776-9296). The Elizabeth House is the headquarters for the organization.
Elizabeth House offers a number of services:
- The Meal Kitchen, which services free, hot meals every day of the year. Elizabeth House is open for meals from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Elizabeth House operates a pantry, which distributes food to individual persons and families who have kitchens.
- Promotes state and county services to prevent hunger and homelessness in Laurel
- Operates a 24-hour answering service to take requests for help (301-262-7106).
- Provides help to families in crisis and emergency situations.
How you can help your neighbors in Laurel through Elizabeth House:
- Serve meals at the meal kitchen-just one to four times a month!
- Become a telephone volunteer. These volunteers serve one or more shifts each week, responding to calls for help. (Calls are routed through a central answering service to protect the privacy of the volunteers.)
- Join one of our communities to help Elizabeth House run smoothly. The communities include Community Relations; Facilities, Building, and Grounds; Food Management; Fund Raising/Finance; Public Relations; and Volunteer Recruitment.
- Donate food, money, or paper products.
