Reality
As a neighbor of Reality, First UMC provides both tangible and moral support.
Reality, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization specializing in the treatment of chemically dependent adult men and women. Residential components include an intermediate care facility and a co-ed halfway house.
Location
Reality's three residential facilities are located in the historic district of Laurel in northern Prince George's County. Priority admission is granted to Prince George's County residents, however, their service area includes the entire state.
Financing
Reality, Inc. operates through a variety of funding sources. These include: state grants, private contracts, and client fees. Client fees are based on the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's ability to pay scale.
Philosophy of Care
The staff at Reality believes that chemical dependency is a progressive, fatal disease that has negative effects on all aspects of an individual's life. They believe that full recovery is possible through total abstinence and ongoing support. Recognizing the necessity for family involvement, Reality offers a program that addresses the needs of family members and significant others.
Admissions
Individuals seeking admission to Reality must be 18 years of age or older and have a primary diagnosis of chemical dependency.
Other criteria include:
- Being medically stable and beyond the stage of acute withdrawal.
- Being ambulatory and capable of self care.
- Being free from major medical or psychological complications.
Treatment
Most treatment at Reality takes place in a group setting. Residents adhere to a daily schedule which includes:
- Educational groups
- Nutrition lectures
- Group counseling
- Individual counseling
- Treatment planning
- Family counseling
- Assessments
Staff
The facilities and programs within the Reality, Inc. system utilize a multidisciplinary team approach to treatment. The staff is composed of professionals who bring expertise, experience and an impressive array of credentials to the program. Staff and volunteers must adhere to a strict code of ethics and maintain full compliance with federal law regarding confidentiality.
