Technology Tools
This page collects pointers to some software tools that may help you use this site or collaborate with others. Of course, these tools require a computer, and may require other hardware (e.g., an audio card and speakers) to fully function.
PDF File Viewers
Some files on this site are provided in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).
PDF files are read using freely available software. If you don't already
have compatible software, you should be able to download
Acrobat® Reader®
software directly from Adobe®.
Web Browsers
We strongly encourage the use of modern web browsers (and operating systems). Older web browsers often have serious bugs which may allow criminals to use your computer to commit crimes against you and others. In addition, older browsers don't suuport modern page layout which allows access to disabled users and is consistently interpreted accross operating systems, browsers, and displays. As we increasingly move to modern page layout, older browsers may not be able to read the pages. We recommend the following browsers:
- Firefox 2.0 (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Mozilla 1.7.13 (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Netscape 8.1.2 (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Internet Explorer 7 (Windows)
- Safari 1.2 (Mac)
Ogg Audio Players
The audio files on this site are usually provided in both MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats. We highly recommend Ogg Vorbis due to the generally smaller size of file for the same quality (and therefore faster and cheaper downloads). Before going to the trouble of downloading a player you might want to try your current audio player. Many new audio players are comming with the ability to play Ogg files.
A list of some Ogg Vorbis Software is available at Vorbis.com. A few of these are:
- Realplayer 10 (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Winamp (Windows)
- Quicktime Components (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Zinf (Windows, Linux)
- XMMS (Linux)
